Things to Consider in Advance
What should we require from our consultant?
Expertise, guidance, wisdom . . . but not miracles. Your consultant is your partner, a member of your team, for the time she is there. Choose your consultant with care. Spell out expectations in advance. Maintain an open and honest relationship, and she will do the same.
How do we get started?
Begin with a written proposal that states without question the proposed arrangement between the consultant and client. Address all your questions and concerns before signing anything. The resulting contract should provide a confidentiality clause and include a provision for termination if that becomes necessary.
In Florida, fundraising consultants are licensed by the State and required to submit contracts for review 5 days in advance of beginning work. Other states have similar requirements. Always be sure you know your state’s regulations. Ask for your consultant’s registration information, if applicable.
How are fees determined?
Fees are proposed in advance and are never determined on a percentage or commission basis. They are based on the particular service(s) being requested, the amount of time projected and any anticipated expenses associated with the project.
When deciding to hire a consultant, cost should not be the primary consideration, although it is important. Remember: the value of a consultant is measured by the ability to teach, not do. In the end, your decision to hire or not hire will be based on your honest responses to the following questions:
- Will my organization benefit from this investment?
- Will I analyze and follow through on my consultant’s advice and recommendations?
